Kalkstein vitner om at det var et rikt liv i havet for omtrent 500 millioner år siden. Mineralet kalkspat er forsteina skjell og kalkskall fra dyr som levde i havet da.
Når kalkspaten blir presset og «kokt» i varmen fra jorda ble den til kalkstein. Når det skjedde var det også varmt for andre bergarter, og smelta granitt o.l. kunne blande seg i kalksuppa. Det er denne blandingen vi i dag kaller for marmor.
Kalksteinen her er tatt ved marmorgrotta i Røyrvik.
Limestone testifies that there was a rich life in the ocean about 500 million years ago. The mineral lime is from shells and bones from animals that lived in the sea at that time.
When the lime is pressed and “boiled” in the heat from the earth, it becomes limestone. When that happened, it was also hot for other rocks, and melted granite and others could be mixed in the “lime soup”. It is this mixture we today call marble.
The limestone here is from the marble cave in Røyrvik, an exciting attraction that is worth a visit.
